“Thinking Realism”, “Struggling for the Banner” and Other Curatorial Projects: Is There a Place for Realistic Tradition in Contemporary Art?

Åkaterina Degot, PhD. Art historian, art critic and curator based in Moscow. Graduated from Moscow State University as an art historian. Worked as curator at the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, and a culture columnist at the “Kommersant Daily”, Moscow. In 2002-2005 she wrote a column on everyday objects of Post-Soviet neocapitalist life in the Moscow "Bolshoj Gorod" ("Big City") magazine. She was a guest professor in many American and European universities. Currently she teaches at Aleksandr Rodchenko Moscow School of Photography and Multimedia and writes for the “Vedomosti” newspaper. She is interested in the specific nature of Russian modernism, including Soviet realism, and unofficial conceptualism of the 1970s and 1980s.
